the seminar is over, by now you should have received your grades and we wanted to thank you all again for participating in the seminar and your great work!

If you should have any comments, feedback or opinions towards the seminar, we are happy to receive it via Mail.

One last request from our side would be to check your PCs on installed Software from the seminar.

We are currently missing one license key from the Unicorn headset, so if one of you should still have installed the Unicorn Suite on his/her PC and the key activated, please deactivate the key, otherwise we need to request a reset on manufacturer side :-(

We wish you all the best for your future studies and hope to see you again in some BCI related lecture/semniar :-)

Best and stay healthy,

MI-Group - Monday, 28th of September from 11:00 to 11:45

Automated Learning Group - Tuesday, 29th of September from 11:00 to 11:45

Visual Stress Group - Wednesday, 30th of September from 11:00 to 11:45

The demo shall include a short presentation starting with the problem that your group wanted to solve within the seminar and a demonstration of your prototype, in the best case fully working ;-) The time frame is set to 30 minutes for the demonstration and another 15 minutes for questions. Please make sure that everybody in the group is presenting and that not only one person is speaking. We choose 11 am so that you have one hour from 10 - 11 to prepare your demo.

According to our safety regulations we will not all be able to attend the demonstrations in person, so only the presenting group and the supervisors will be at the lab (Turing 1) and the rest of the seminar will join via video call.

If you should have any problems with the dates and time mentioned above let us know and we will try to find a solution.

Dear students,

by now most of you should have been at DFKI at least once and received the introduction to the lab and signed the consent form.

As some of you have informed us, that they will probably not need all the days we offer in the lab, but also work from home partially, we will need to agree on a common way of announcing the days that you want to be here. The reason for this procedure is that we have a maximum number of persons allowed in the building per day and if you should not show up, we can reschedule these presence days to DFKI employees.

The procedure therefor looks as follows, please keep track of the days that have been assigned to you, group 1 started on Wednesday, had their second appointment on Monday, the third appointment on Thursday and so on. This will remain the order and therefor define the available days that you can be present at DFKI.

If you want to do so and come to DFKI, please inform us latest until Thursday the week before. Please write an email to your supervisor as well as Anselm.Blocher@dfki.de and Teresa.Rummler@dfki.de in CC with the following content:

Subject: BCI-Seminar presence at DFKI

Dear <name_of_supervisor>,

the <name_of_group> -group would like to be present next week on <day_of_presence> from <start_time> to <end_time> with the following people

<name_of_group_member_1>

<name_of_group_member_2>

....

Please have in mind that the start and end times should lay between 10 am and 5 pm.

If you do not send this mail until Thursday evening, we do not expect you to be here the following week and you can not be at DFKI, so please plan ahead and inform us in time! THX!

Best,

Maurice

Dear students,

we finally received the go for our group work phase in the DFKI building starting from next week Wednesday, 8th of July 2020. Unexpectedly we even received the ok to have the whole groups working in one room, which means that you will be able to work at DFKI with the hardware all together. The crisis management granted us a meeting room (Turing 1) which we have booked from next week until the first of October. The plan is that you will work there in groups and that we also have the final presentation/demo in this room.

The plan for the next week is, that we will prepare this room for you on Monday and Tuesday so that you have all the hardware setup you need in this room including a PC, EEG-Headsets and VR-headsets. The PC should have all necessary software environments and libraries needed and all hardware installed already. On your first day you will receive a short safety instruction concerning Corona rules and an introduction by one of our colleagues Tobias about how to use the EEG-Headset, how to record data, start and stop measurements etc. as well as an introduction to the Unity scene for those of you who are using it.

The preliminary schedule looks as follows:

Wednesday 8th of July, 10 am - 5 pm: MI Group

Thursday 9th of July, 10 am - 5 pm: Automated Training Group

Friday 10th of July, 10 am - 5 pm: Visual Stress Group

The week after on Monday will be reserved for MI Group again, Tuesday Automate Training Group, Wednesday Visual Stress Group and so on until Oktober.

Please note that those dates, beside the first 3 where you will receive introduction to the hardware and the general safety rules, are not mandatory appointments. If you do not want to or are not able to be at DFKI for that one day just inform me or your tutor about it. Please do so, as for safety regulations I was asked to open the door for you each and every day at the DFKI Vis-Center entrance, right in front of the Mensa. The reason for choosing this entrance is, that it is the shortest path through the DFKI building to the meeting room.

Those and other safety measures and checklists will be send to you via mail today. Please read those documents carefully as those rules currently apply for everybody working in the building and I was asked to get a signature of all of you on the first meeting in the building that you have read those regulations and confirm to follow those rules carefully.

If there should be any further questions please do not hesitate to contact me, otherwise have a nice weekend everybody and see you according to the dates mentioned above next week.

Don't forget to bring a mask! wink

Maurice

Each group should prepare a 20 minutes presentation about the results of their literature research and their implementation plan. Make sure to split up the presentation equally among all team members and that each of you speaks ca. 5 minutes.

Each presentation will be followed by a discussion and the tutors will ask questions.

After this presentation you will receive the go for the implementation part or the advice on how to adjust your implementation plan before you can start implementing.

Dear all,

registration is closed and the groups are assigned, so it's time to start with the literature research! You can find your topic description as well as all the initial papers to start with here in the CMS on the Materials page.

If you should get into trouble during the process, e.g. not being able to access literature, uncertainty if a paper is a valid scientific source, or if you are not sure if you are looking into the right direction at all, please contact your tutor. As Matthias is currently still on vacation, I assigned myself as tutor for the Motor-Imagery BCI group and you can contact me in case of any questions
Concerning the fact, that a literature research can be cumbersome, confusing and sometimes misleading we would ask you to submit preliminary results of your literature research after 3 weeks from now on at 28th of May here in the CMS. Submission will open on 28th at 00:00 and be opened until 23:59 the same day. Please submit a PDF including a list of all the literature you have collected so far and which you consider relevant for your topic. We will have a look at it and inform you if you are on the right track.

So far, everybody stay healthy and happy researching smiley

Brain-Computer Interaction

Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCI) have been a widely researched topic for the last 20 years. BCIs make use of brain activity to create controls for computers or machines in general. The most common approach to establish such a connection between computer and brain is to measure the electrical activity of the brain at the scalp surface, via Electroencephalography (EEG). Those EEG devices are non-invasive, comparably cheap and can nowadays even be used with dry electrode caps, which makes them easy to setup. Within this seminar you will learn about different techniques and types of BCIs and develop your own Brain-Computer Interface with a dry electrode EEG-headset in a group project.
