If you are in Tutorial group 1 and would prefer to keep the current time and attend in person, please feel free to join Tutorial group 2 regularly.

Furthermore, an annonymous feedback post has reached us that I would like to address here:

question: The post indicated that the degree of detail necessary and wanted in questions that ask for the reporting of effects was unclear. Especially, question 5 b on the sample exam seemed to ask just for a simple decision, while the sample solution featured relevant statistics etc.

answer: „Report“ has a special meaning and always includes stating the relevant statistic and significance. We are usually also interested in direction and magnitude of an effect, if this information is available from the model output (not the case for ANOVA and chisquare output). When we ask to report an effect, we don’t want you to explain general concepts like what a coefficient is or what significant means, but to give your scientific conclusion as you would do in a scientific paper. You will usually not lose points in the exam, if you do explain the concepts behind it though. What we expect is that you concentrate on the important information, i.e. reporting on effects does not include reporting on model fit and if we ask to report in the light of a specific research hypothesis, we expect you to be able to select relevant portions of model output.

In general, giving justifications of decisions on the exam is wanted, we will usually also indicate this in the question and this is not ideal in question 5 b on the sample exam, "Justify your answer" should have been added.

Best wishes,

Emilia

Dear student,

due to sickness, three tutorials are cancelled this week, but we try to give each of you the chance to attend, so:

tutorials 1 & 2 will meet together at the usual time (8:15) in room SR016 with Maike Kalms

tutorial 3 unfortunately has to be cancelled. Please feel free to attend any other tutorial slot this week.

tutorials 4 & 5 will meet together at 10:15 in room SR 014 with Aarushi Singhal

tutorial 6 will be unaffected

In addition, we had some feedback with the request to shift the weekly deadline for exercise sheets to Tuesdays. Unfortunately, this is not possible, as the tutors need enough time to look through submissions before the tutorial and to grade them in a timely manner. For next week (sheet7, not released yet), however, we have shifted the deadline to after Christmas (December 28) to give you some more time.

As a last remark, there is another obligatory datacamp course coming up, which is due on January, 8.

Best wishes,

Emilia Ellsiepen

There will be some practise exam questions for the content covered so far available on cms before the Christmas break, which will be discussed in the first tutorial session in January. You do not need to hand in your solutions, it is just for you to practise and prepare for the exam.

With regard to the regular exercise sheets, please be reminded that you need to provide an answer for each subquestion. Not answering subquestions will lead to a fail on the entire exercise sheet.

If you have been assigned to that tutorial (#7), but are taking the course for the first time and for credit, please get in touch! If you are retaking the course, but were still assigned to a tutorial slot other than #7 although you opted for the "no tutorial", also get in touch!

Retakers are welcome to join the tutorials to refresh their memory and get some more practise.

Students registering late, will be distributed to the tutorials as soon as possible for us.

Please be reminded that the first datacamp assignment is due on October 31!

There are two kinds of exercises: datacamp courses and our own exercise sheets.

The DataCamp exercises will be given each week, access will be available for you after signing up (see Materials section for details).

There will be no lecture in the first week of the semester, but the first datacamp assignment is due! Make sure to register on datacamp and download and install R on your computer as indicated under materials. There are three helpdesk sessions in the first week, in case you experience problems with these steps.

Our own sheets will be available on this site each week after the lecture. They are always due on Saturday night. Please form assignment groups of 3 students and hand in together. For the first sheet, it is possible to hand in individually. All students that are not part of an assignment group will be grouped by us on November 8, but please try finding partners for the first sheet already, you can use the forum.

To be admitted to the exam:
- DataCamp: you need to do all obligatory DataCamp exercises.
- Our sheets (PDFs or R files): you can miss one complete sheet without excuses. If you are ill and have to miss 2 or more sheets, please contact us.
A whole sheet is counted as completed only if you made a good attempt to solve each question or if you at least formulated why you couldn't solve it and what you have tried.

We are following two books:

  • Learning statistics with R: A tutorial for psychology students and other beginners by Danielle Navarro
  • Statistical Methods for Psychology by David C. Howell

If you are retaking the course and have admission to writing the exam already, you do not need to enrol in a tutorial (choose "no tutorial" option). You also do not need to hand in exercise sheets or complete datacamp courses. You are welcome to attend tutorials. If you do, please notify the tutor that you won't hand in exercise sheets.

This class is supported by DataCamp, which allows students to take online classes with automatic code correction for learning R, Python and SQL.
The courses combine short expert videos and hands-on-the-keyboard exercises.
