Written on 09.01.2024 10:55 by Emilia Ellsiepen

Dear student,

starting this week, Tutorial 1 will take place online on TEAMS and the time will move to Wednesdays 14:15-15:45. It is open to everybody who prefers this mode and/or time slot and can be joined on TEAMS with the following link:

https://teams.microsoft.com/l/meetup-join/19%3ameeting_ZGUzYzNlMDEtZTMzOC00NWIzLWIyZDctZmY1NjQ4Y2Q5MTBl%40thread.v2/0?context=%7b%22Tid%22%3a%2267610027-1ac3-49b6-8641-ccd83ce1b01f%22%2c%22Oid%22%3a%229934c552-fdfd-4a09-bea0-00dc0df2a20b%22%7d

If you are in Tutorial group 1 and would prefer to keep the current time and attend in person, please feel free to join Tutorial group 2 regularly.

Furthermore, an annonymous feedback post has reached us that I would like to address here:

question: The post indicated that the degree of detail necessary and wanted in questions that ask for the reporting of effects was unclear. Especially, question 5 b on the sample exam seemed to ask just for a simple decision, while the sample solution featured relevant statistics etc.

answer: „Report“ has a special meaning and always includes stating the relevant statistic and significance. We are usually also interested in direction and magnitude of an effect, if this information is available from the model output (not the case for ANOVA and chisquare output). When we ask to report an effect, we don’t want you to explain general concepts like what a coefficient is or what significant means, but to give your scientific conclusion as you would do in a scientific paper. You will usually not lose points in the exam, if you do explain the concepts behind it though. What we expect is that you concentrate on the important information, i.e. reporting on effects does not include reporting on model fit and if we ask to report in the light of a specific research hypothesis, we expect you to be able to select relevant portions of model output.

In general, giving justifications of decisions on the exam is wanted, we will usually also indicate this in the question and this is not ideal in question 5 b on the sample exam, "Justify your answer" should have been added.

Best wishes,

Emilia
