Dear students,

The deadline for registering for the re-exam is the 31.08.2026. If you want to take part, please start registering soon and don't wait until the last day. If you have problems registering, refer to the notes below:

• I can't find the course in LSF: For some students the course is in a different category in the LSF register. For example, instead of finding it in advanced courses it is available in mandatory elective courses for some (which should be the last option). Also note, that you are somehow not able to find the course through the search bar. So in the worst case, please look through the whole register, it's there somewhere.
• I find it in LSF, but I get an error when registering: This can have many causes, but in any case you have to contact the examination office of your study subject immediately. They can manually register you in most cases, but they cannot fix it if you register on the last day.
• I don't find it and I'm studying Media Informatics M.Sc: In these cases, we also have to register you manually and you have to provide your bachelor's transcript of records. Please send a mail to Gian-Luca with your transcript.

Dear students,

The results of the exam and the resulting final grade of the course are now online.

We will do the exam inspection tomorrow (12.08.2026), 1 pm to 4 pm (13:00-16:00) in HS 001 in E1 3. If you are not able to attend but want to have a look at your exam, please notify us (Xinrong & Gian-Luca) asap via mail so we can plan another inspection session, thanks!

Here is some organizational information about today's exam:

• Date and Time: Today (3.8.2026), Entrance and Seating at 4 pm (16:00), Start at 4:15 pm (16:15)
• Rooms: E1 3, HS001 and HS002. You find the seating plan in front of the lecture halls or here.
• Working Time: 90 minutes
• No additional material is allowed!
• Please bring your student ID card as well as your passport.

• Since it's again really hot today, please bring enough water.

• If you also want to bring your hardware kits to the exam, please be there early.

The deadline for the exam registration is over, you should see your registration status on your personal page. 

In this week's tutorials, the tutors will give you some general information about the exam next week, discuss some sample exercises, and answer possible questions about the lecture content. We will also provide the tutorial document HERE, so you can still review the document if you cannot join the tutorials this week.

• Exam registration: Remember to register for the exam this week! If you still have problems registering and haven't reached out yet, please contact us.
• No tutorials this week: There will be no tutorials this week, since the tutors and TAs are currently grading your project submissions (expect your MS3 results to show up by the end of this week). 
• Tutorials next week / Hardware return: There will be tutorials next week, which you can use to ask questions regarding the exam. Moreover, you must return your hardware kits (basic kit + any additional hardware you got from us). If you cannot attend the tutorials, you can also make an appointment for returning them to the office.
• For students transferring from last year: Please check if all your project points are transferred (note: they have been scaled) and that you have passed the admission for the exam. 

Dear students,

• Thank you all for your nice presentations yesterday! Please also update/upload your posters in the CMS submissions until this Sunday (if not happened already for printing). Remember to also submit your project, report and video until Sunday.
• This week, there will be regular tutorials where the solutions to exercise sheet 4 will be discussed. Please remember that the deadline for exercise sheet 4 is today until 11:59!
• Remember to register for our exam (03.08.26) in the LSF until 27.07.26. Please look in the right place (see here). If you're still not able to find it, but in general should be able to register in LSF, talk to your study secretaries immediately. If none of these work, write a mail to us.

Dear students,

today, we are having our project bazar at DFKI VisRoom. Please do not use the DFKI main entrance, but the side entrance directly across the Mensa (see here). Each group has a designated table marked with the team number. The posters submitted to us, are already on their tables.

We expect you to be there 4pm latest. If you want to come a little earlier to set things up, that's a good idea, too. There will be two mandatory steps during the Bazar:

1. Each group will present to and discuss their work with a team of one TA and two tutors. This slot will be 8 minutes and will be performed in a specific order (you will see the order printed out there). These 8 minutes consist of a presentation of 4 minutes and a Q&A of 4 minutes. After the presentation is done, we will mark your poster first.
2. Each group will be visited by one UMTL colleague which is still completely new to your project. To them, you can again present your project and she/he will probably also have questions. They have a fresh perspective on your projects and will also help grading them later. When the colleague has finished her or his evaluation, they will give you another mark on your poster.

When you completed both steps and have both marks on your poster, you are free to leave quietly without disturbing the other presentations! But of course, other students could want to checkout your project and you are encouraged to checkout the other projects as well (only if there isn't an ongoing presentation to us or the UMTL colleagues). So consider staying until the end.

Dear students,

you can come to the office to pick up additional hardware or resolder parts tomorrow (until 1 pm) or on Wednesday (until 11 am). 

Some information for the project bazar:

• We offer to print your poster at our office. But for that, you need to submit it on Friday as a PDF in the CMS. If you want to print it on your own, that's fine, too.
• During the project bazar, you will give an 8 minute group presentation of your prototype (4 minutes presentation + 4 minutes Q&A) to the tutors and TAs. Moreover, there will be other colleagues from UMTL which will also come to your project booth and discuss your project more informally. Still, they will help us grade your project, so it's also important as well.
• Since the deadline of exercise sheet 4 also falls on the Monday, we extend the deadline until the beginning of the tutorials to Tuesday, 12 pm to give you some more time.

We will have two more upcoming lectures on Monday, 29.06.2026 and on Monday, 06.07.2026. The week after, we will have our Project Bazar on Monday, 13.07.2026.

Dear students,

Thank you all for your intermediate presentations last week! Here are some information about Milestone 3, Project Bazar, and more:

• The Milestone 3 document can be found in the materials section now. It also lists the exact deadlines for the different submission parts. The template for the final report will be uploaded this week.
• The Project Bazar will happen on the 13.07.2026, 4 - 7 pm (one additional hour as a buffer). The physical attendance of each group member is mandatory, we won't make any exceptions for the final presentations.
• Considering team work: We have noticed that some teams don't really work together as a team and/or that some persons in a team don't even come to working sessions or to presentations. Working as  a group on the project is mandatory! We will verify at the final presentation, wether everybody in a team contributed their fair share to the project. So please plan for the final submission how you can distribute the work. If you have serious problems with team mates not responding or not contributing, please let us know.
• If you need additional hardware (wires and stuff) you can get them at our offices as usual. For those groups, with which we discussed about ordering additional parts, we will inform you as soon as we have them. 
• A note about LLM-generated content: We noticed the use of LLM-generated images and/or text in multiple MS2 submissions. You mustn't use this content without marking it as LLM-generated! We deduct points for intransparent use of these tools. Please mark all content where you used LLMs, especially for the final report and poster.

Dear students,

We have some points regarding the Milestone 2 deadline and presentations:

1. The deadline for your Milestone 2 report is on Sunday, 14.06.26, 23:59.
2. In the tutorials next week, you will present your prototypes to your tutor and both assistants. Attendance is mandatory for all group members. If you can't be there physically and can arrange to present via video call, that is fine as well.
3. Regarding your presentation itself: We want to check the current state of your prototype. You don't need any presentation slides, but if you want to use them to elaborate your project progression, you can do that. It's also interesting to us, who in the group was responsible for what parts of the project and how you plan to divide the work until the final presentation. 
4. If you still need additional hardware or replacements, we are in the office on Tuesday from 9 am until around 11:30 am. So you can come by, if you need anything.

Another reminder: As planned, there is no lecture on Monday. You can use that time for working on your projects.

Dear students,

we have your additional hardware requests ready and the kits will be distributed in your tutorials this week. You can also come and pick them up at the UMTL Office at DFKI today, tomorrow, or on Thursday. Please inform the assistants, when you want to pick up your hardware. In general, if you need smaller stuff like buttons, resistors, cables, etc you can just write a mail to the assistants and come pick them up at our offices (DFKI, newer building opposite to Mensa, +1.79) as well.

 

Dear students,

We uploaded the requirements for your milestone 2 report in the materials. We also updated the deadline for its submission as well as the prototype presentation in the tutorials:

• Milestone 2 Report: 23:59, 14.06.2026
• Prototype Presentations: In the week from 15.06.2026 to 19.06.2026 in your respective tutorial.
• The final project bazaar on 13.07.2026 won't and cannot be shifted.

We had to shift both because of the extended deadline of milestone 1 and a public holiday in the originally planned prototype presentation week.

The additional hardware is currently assigned to each group and missing hardware will be ordered. We will distribute the additional hardware as soon as possible.

There won't be any lectures the next two weeks, but there will be tutorials. We recommend you to join them since the tutors will tell you about HCI concepts needed for the milestone 2 report.

Dear students,

In this week's tutorial, you will discuss the sample solutions to the first exercise sheet (which you must submit today by 23:59). Since we have another public holiday on Thursday, you can also join other tutorials if your regular tutorial is affected. If you cannot join another tutorial, you can still discuss the sample solution in the tutorial next week.

We are currently evaluating your Milestone 1 submissions and are trying to equip you with the additional hardware as soon as possible. More information about that and the Milestone 2 requirements will follow this week. We still recommend that you start working with your already available hardware as soon as possible.

Dear students,

Since there are still some questions about the project ideas and the group forming, we extend both deadlines to Friday (08.05.2025, 23:59). Please use the additional tutorial this week to get feedback on your ideas by the tutors.

If you are not yet in a group with other students here in the CMS, please contact us immediately, so we can find a group for you. The projects must be done in groups.

Reminder: As noted in the lecture plan, there is no lecture on Monday, so you can use the time for the project idea.

Consider using the forum for questions. This way, all other students can benefit as well. 

Dear students,

please create or update your groups here in the CMS, so they include all the group members. This is important for the submissions, so we can assign the points from the milestones.

Moreover, the first exercise sheet will be published at 4pm today and can then be found in the materials section. You can also find a template for submitting your solution. You have two weeks to submit the solution as a group (the same group you're doing the project with).

Dear students,

please update your preferences for the tutorials until Saturday night, we added two new tutorials. For the distribution of the tutorials, it would help us a lot, thanks! 

IMPORTANT: The attendance in the first tutorial next week is mandatory! If you are not attending unexcused, you will be excluded from the lecture. This is necessary for forming the project groups. If you are transferring your projects and exercises from last year's iteration, you don't have to attend the tutorials. In cases of emergency or sickness, inform the assistants and the tutor asap that you can't attend the first tutorial.

 

 

Dear Students,

Please note the following procedure for transferring projects and exercises from the previous year:

Note on transfer of credit from previous semester:

• “I have successfully completed the exercises and projects of IAS in summer term 25, but have not passed the final exam. Can I just write the exam?”
  Yes, you can transfer your exercises and projects from IAS in summer term 25 to IAS in summer term 26, so you do not have to hand in exercises and project assignments a second time. Please contact Gian-Luca Kiefer with your name and matriculation number before April 18 2025 (23:59).
• You cannot transfer partial grades from previous IAS lectures.
