Seminar Operators on Hilbert Space

In the seminar, we will study operators on Hilbert space, a topic in functional analysis. In addition to their intrinsic value, operators on Hilbert space connect to topics in complex analysis, partial differential equations and free probability. Outside of mathematics, they have found applications e.g. in quantum mechanics and in control theory.
This seminar will cover results on Hilbert space operators for which there is there is typically not enough time in a functional analysis lecture. In particular, we will encounter many important examples of operators.

Prerequisites
Mandatory: basic real analysis and linear algebra (e.g. Analysis 1+2 and Lineare Algebra 1+2 at UdS).
Recommended: basic measure theory and complex analysis (e.g. Analysis 3 and Funktionentheorie at UdS)
The seminar is suitable for students who are either taking functional analysis concurrently or have already taken a course in functional analysis.
Language
The seminar will be held in either English or German, depending on the audience.
Expectations
- Giving a presentation (approx. 80 minutes),
- Writing a report on the topic of the presentation (10-15 pages),
- Regularly participating in the seminar.
