For the last two weeks, only ~20 people were present during the lecture, while almost 300 do the quiz. The lecture recordings are provided as a service who have other obligations during the lecture slot; this mostly concerns LLM students. It is demotivating and insulting to the speakers if almost no one shows up. Please keep this in mind. I am very much inclined NOT to provide recordings in the future if this behavior continues. So please watch the lectures live when they are given and participate actively by asking questions.

The quiz results up to quiz 07 (i.e., all quizzes of 2023) have been graded and entered, so you can take a look at your Personal Status Page. If you are below the current 60% (42 of 70 after 7 quizzes), don't worry; there are still 4 lectures planned (although, if one has to be cancelled on short notice, there will be fewer!):

08.01.2024  Andrea Volkamer: "Data Driven Drug Design: Structural Bioinformatics and Cheminformatics Approaches"
15.01.2024  Alexey Gurevich: "Hunting new antibiotics with computer science (Elements of chem- and bioinformatics)"
22.01.2024  Tomohiro Nagashima: "Understanding and Supporting Human Learning with Advanced Technology"
29.01.2024  Michael Schwarz: TBA

So, we may have up to 110 possible points at the end, of which 66 are required to pass (60%). Thank you for your participation in this course!

The third quiz (about the Quantitative Verification lecture by Prof. Kaminski) has started and is available till Friday evening.
You can (and should) use the lecture recording to answer the questions.
After this quiz, you should have at least 18 of the 30 possible points to be within the 60%.

There were questions about accessing your past answers; but there seems to be a problem with the system.
If you want to look at your past answers, please make a screenshot before the quiz terminates.

Good evening everyone!

Please remember to take the second quiz before Friday evening. The lecture recording and PDF slides for Professor Demberg's lecture are available in the Materials section. The quiz is more difficult than the one last week because there are multiple options for every question, and more than answer can be correct. A point is only given if the complete set of correct answers and no wrong answer is given. There will also be easier quizzes again.

Here is some clarification on the registration questions:

1. You MUST be registered HERE in the CMS; otherwise you cannot take the quizzes and access the Materials.

2. You MUST be registered in the LSF/HISPOS, not for the course, but for the exam, to get ECTS credits.
Exceptions only apply to students who are not enrolled in a standard program of the department. This typically concerns the following groups who CANNOT register in LSF for the exam:
- LL.M IT & Law program students (different department)
- exchange students (ERASMUS and other programs)
- junior students
- perhaps further groups and individual special cases
These special groups of students are handled by their respective examination offices and will receive a written note after completion of the course.
If you do not belong to such a special group, the only way to get credit is via the LSF exam registration.

Dear all,

it is very important for the online quizzes that the data in the CMS is correct, especially your matriculation number and your filed of study must be entered correctly. If your matriculation number is wrong, we will not be able to give you credit at the end of the course. For example, 755570 is not a valid matriculation number.

The next lecture takes place on Monday, and a new quiz will be available after the lecture. It has to be completed, until Friday evening, as usual. Please check and (if necessary) correct your data before attempting the quiz.

Have a nice weekend!

Perspectives of Computer Science

Lectures: Different PIs of Saarland Informatics Campus and CISPA present various research topics in computer science (in English).

Organisation: Prof. Dr. Sven Rahmann

Time: Every Monday, starting 30.10.2023, at 14:15 - 15:45

Location: online lecture on zoom (link: see Materials after registration here in the CMS).
The zoom room supports at most 300 people. If it is full, do not worry:
The lectures will be recorded and made available in "Information -> Materials".

Prerequisites: none; the lecture is for beginning students in computer science.

Passing the course:

  • This is a mandatory but ungraded course for 2 ECTS credits.
  • After every lecture, there will be an online quiz that must be taken by each student. A certain number of correct answers (60%) must be given in the quizzes to pass the course. (Students whose study plan counts this course with only 1 ECTS credit need to get half of that, i.e. 30%).
  • The quizzes are in here in the CMS (called "online tests").
  • Quizzes consist of approximately 10 multiple-choice questions.
  • Quizzes are open till Friday after the lecture, 23:59. Results will be available after the quiz closes.
  • You can revisit and edit your answers until the deadline.
  • In contrast to previous versions of this lecture, no summaries have to be written or handed in.

Important registration information:

  • You must register for this course on this website (CMS) in order to access the recorded lectures and other material.
  • You must register for the exam of this course separately in HIS/POS (LSF) until 30.11.2023; otherwise you cannot get credit. No exceptions; no late registrations. If you forget the HIS/POS registration, you cannot get credit even if you get 60% of all quiz points!
(Note: LL.M. students cannot register in LSF, HIS/POS. It is sufficient to be registered here (in the CMS) and achieve 30% of the points for 1 ECTS credit. You will get a written confirmation if you pass the course to hand over to your examination office)

Questions?

  • Please read the FAQ below first, then use the "Forum".
  • To connect with each other, we may also set up a discord server for everyone. However, it will not be monitored by the organization team.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • How do I register in LSF / HISPOS ?

Registration has to be completed till 30.11.2023 !
Please choose exam number 10036 in "Prüfungsstrukturbaum" -> "Informatik" -> "Bachelor" -> "Lecture Series on Topics in Computer Science". (This does not apply to LL.M students, who cannot register in HISPOS/LSF. They will receive a written confirmation letter at the end of the course.)

  • I forgot to finish a quiz in time. Can I do a late submission?
No; you'll get 0 points for this quiz. Don´t worry, you only need 60%, so it's enough to make sure you do well in the following weeks.

  • I started the quiz, then time ran out, and I never submitted. What now?
The questions that you have answered within the time frame will be graded; the remainder will be scored with zero.
