Hi all,

to improve upon the course, your feedback would be greatly appreciated. You will have the opportunity to evaluate until Friday, 22nd of march. Suggestions for material are as welcome as suggestions for handling of examples etc. I know the selection of material may sometimes seem strange at first glance, but my goal is to provide some value that is not easily found elsewhere -- at least for beginners. In my mind it will turn out how helpful the course was once you start working on your first project, hopefully finding some support in the slides.

Best,

Friedrich

Blockkurs Einführung in LaTeX / Introduction to LaTeX

From Wednesday, 6th of march, to Friday, 8th of march, the second iteration of this introductory course to LaTeX will take place. Each day, there will be two time slots: 10-12 and 13-15. The place is lecture hall 2 in building E2.5. The course will be geared towards students of mathematics, but students from other faculties are welcome, too! Like last year, the course will follow the notes that can be found in "Materials". The course will be a voluntary affair without the award of credit points. A (n incomprehensive) list of covered topics:

  • Basic mechanisms of LaTeX, crude typography, fonts and advice
  • Horses for courses: Document classes, presets and how to find existing material
  • Links, references, index
  • Bibliography using BibLaTeX and biber, sources for bibliographic information
  • Typesetting mathematics (general rules of thumb, nice to know environments and hacks from IEEEtrantools, mathtools, etc.)
  • Basic 2D sketches using TikZ, an overview over pgfplots, tikzcd
  • Setting up modular documents
  • Typesetting source code
  • LaTeX beamer
  • Letters

The idea for this course is part interactive, part slides. Participants are encouraged to bring laptops. For an easy start Overleaf can be used. For unix based systems, help for installation of a local TeX distribution can be provided.

Please register as soon as possible and let me know what language (english/german) you would prefer. According to the number of to be participants, a room will be chosen and organisation will be finalised. Please use the comment function for wishes on extra material.
