2. If this course does not show up for you on LSF or you cannot register for the exam, please send us an email until tomorrow, March 18th. Empirical Software Engineering Research

Empirical software engineering research plays an important role to improve software engineering by studying its processes, tools, and humans with empirical methods. In this lecture, we provide an overview of typical quantitative and qualitative research methods. We discuss in-depth on how to properly conduct empirical studies and interpret collected data. Specific topics will include:

  • Importance of empirical methods in SE
  • Controlled experiments
  • Experiment designs and threats to validity
  • Data measurement and descriptive statistics
  • Data analysis and inference statistics
  • Experiment conduct
  • Qualitative studies (e.g., surveys, case studies, interviews)
  • Secondary studies (e.g., systematic literature reviews)
  • Further topics (e.g., replication, open science, ethics, report writing)
In addition to the lectures, we plan for several guest lectures on current topics in empirical software engineering research.

Important Note on Lecture Format

This course will take place in March 2023 as an intensive one-week block course from Monday, 06.03.2023 to Friday, 10.03.2023. On each day, we will have lectures in the morning (8:30 - 12:00) and one in the afternoon (14:00 - 16:00). You will need to attend the lectures to participate in the mini tests during the lectures. Successful participation in the mini tests is a prerequisite for the written exam. Please bring an Internet-compatible device (e.g., laptop, smartphone) to submit answers for the mini tests. The answers will be submitted here on the CMS, so please make sure you remember your login. Further details will be shared during the first lecture.

After the lecture week, we provide an optional exercise sheet to practice the contents of this course. In the following week (13.03.2023 to 17.03.2023), we will have an online office hour to discuss open questions.

This is a 4 CP course.

Registration

To obtain access to the course material and to participate in the mini tests, you must register via this CMS course. Registration ends on 06.03.2023 23:59 (at the end of the first day of the lectures).

Exam

The written exam will be on Wednesday, 22th of March 2023. There is no re-exam.

You will need to register in the LSF/Hispos until 18th of March 2023 for the exam. We cannot help if you missed the registration deadline.

Prerequisites

There are no formal prerequisites. An understanding of the basics of software engineering is beneficial.
