The re-exam will start sharp at 10:00 am and takes 120 minutes. Therefore, please be there a few minutes in advance so we can start and finish on time.

The modalities for the re-exam are the same as for the first exam. The only difference is that DSAI students are now able to register via LSF/HISPOS and do not need to get a registration form. For completeness, here are the all the necessary informations again:

  • You are admitted to take the re-exam if you have at least 50% of the total points on the assignment sheets (concretely, at least 110 out of 220 points) and at most two assignments with zero points.
  • In case you are admitted to take the re-exam, you have to register for it:
  1. LSF/HISPOS: You have to individually register for the re-exam using the LSF/HISPOS system (the registration for the first exam does not  count as a registration for the re-exam!). The registration is now also possible for DSAI students.
In case there are any problems with the examination registration, please contact us as soon as possible. The time to register ends on March 10 (one week before the re-exam according to examination regulations). A registration after the deadline will not be possible and no exceptions will be made.
  2. Course Management System: Please register for the re-exam on your personal status page in our CMS system. This registration lets us know how many of you want to participate in the re-exam. The registration will also end on March 10.
  • You have to use a non-erasable pen with black or blue ink.
  • The re-exam and the exercise descriptions will be in English. Therefore, we encourage you to write the re-exam in English. However, you are also allowed to write in German. You can bring a dictionary as well.
  • You are allowed to bring two double-sided sheets of A4-paper containing handwritten notes as cheat sheets. This explicitly excludes printouts.
  • A non-programmable calculator is allowed.
  • Regarding the preparation for the re-exam, refer to the file relevant for exam, which contains an overview of the relevant parts of each lecture. In particular, the relevant content for the re-exam is the same as for the first exam. Furthermore, the first exam and the exercises on the assignment sheets should give a very good impression of how the re-exam exercises might look like.

Elements of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence is a long-standing branch of computer science concerned with the design of algorithms and systems exhibiting intelligent behavior. Data science is a comparatively young area concerned with the extraction of knowledge and insights from structured and unstructured data. Increasingly, the real power of computer science applications lies in combining the two, exploiting insights from data to take intelligent decisions.

Both artificial intelligence (AI) and data science (DS) are complex multi-disciplinary scientific fields. This course provides an overview of central concepts and ideas, structured and motivated by prominent applications requiring elements from both DS and AI. We start with a brief introduction to machine learning (ML), which lies at the heart of the intersection between DS and AI. We then cover game playing, explaining the search and learning techniques essential to recent successes in Go and Chess. We cover autonomous driving as a prominent application of sensing, system design, control, and learning. We cover dialogue systems and the associated learning and reasoning techniques for natural language processing. We finally cover the data processing techniques required to enable big data.

The aim is for students to understand the scope of DSAI and to obtain intuitions about its central algorithmic elements. Detailed technical expositions and analyses of these elements are not covered; these are the subject of later more specialized courses.

The course is accompanied by exercises, covering technical concepts through examples, as well as posing simple programming exercises (suitable for first-term students) in the Python language. This course also contains a quick introduction to Python.
