Assistant: Andreas Buchheit (buchheit@num.uni-sb.de)
Time and Location
The first seminar will take place on April 16, 2025, at 2:15 p.m. in Seminar Room 6. This initial session will be used to clarify organizational matters and to outline the seminar structure. All subsequent sessions will be held in Room 4.12, Building E1.1.
Schedule and Topics
The seminar focuses on understanding eigenvalues, eigenvectors (or eigenfunctions), and the fundamental challenges involved in computing them. The main reference is: A. Quarteroni, R. Sacco, F. Saleri: Numerical Mathematics, [DOI: 10.1007/b98885]. Additional literature may (and should) be used to supplement and deepen the presentations.
The planned schedule is as follows:
- April 30: Introduction and Power Method (YO)
- May 14: QR Iteration for Hessenberg Matrices (OK)
- May 28: QR Iteration with Shifts and Singular Value Decomposition (WL)
- June 11: Generalized Eigenvalue Problems and Methods for Symmetric Matrices (SD)
- July 2: The Lanczos Method and Applications (WN)
-
July 16: Eigenvalues and Differential Operators (CS)
Each presentation will last approximately 60 to 75 minutes and will be accompanied by a handout. Please discuss your presentation with Andreas Buchheit one week before you present it.
